What is Iyengar Yoga?
A precise, accessible method designed for all bodies and ages.
Iyengar Yoga is a method of yoga that emphasises precise alignment and anatomical awareness. Developed by BKS Iyengar over 70+ years of refined teaching, this approach focuses on the correct positioning of your body in each pose—ensuring you build strength safely, prevent injury, and develop a deep understanding of how yoga works from the inside out. Whether you're a complete beginner or an experienced practitioner, Iyengar Yoga meets you exactly where you are.
Props Make It Accessible
One of the defining features of Iyengar Yoga is the intelligent use of props—blocks, straps, blankets, bolsters, and chairs. These aren't crutches; they're tools that make poses accessible to every body, every age, and every ability level. Props help you find proper alignment without strain, allowing you to experience the full benefits of yoga safely. Whether you're recovering from injury, managing limited mobility, or simply building confidence, props support your practice.
Builds Strength & Stability
Precise alignment work strengthens muscles, improves posture, and builds confidence in your body.
Prevents Injury
By understanding alignment, you learn how to move safely and avoid strain or repetitive injury.
Clarity & Mental Calm
Focus on breath and body awareness quiets the mind and builds lasting mental clarity.
Lifelong Wellbeing
Iyengar Yoga is a practice you can sustain for life, adapting as your body and needs change.
Iyengar Yoga is for everyone. It's perfect for beginners who want to learn proper technique from the start. It's ideal for older adults seeking balance, strength, and mobility without impact. It supports athletes and active people looking to prevent injury and improve performance. And it welcomes those recovering from illness or injury, offering therapeutic applications grounded in anatomical precision. At the Iyengar Yoga Centre of Auckland, we've been making this method accessible to all ages and abilities for 30 years—because yoga isn't about being flexible or looking a certain way. It's about understanding your body, honouring your abilities, and building strength and confidence for life.
