Our Story

The Iyengar Yoga Centre of Auckland was established in 1994 by principal and director Monica Haar, with a clear mission: to make the Iyengar method accessible to all ages and abilities. What began as a vision to bring precise, alignment-focused yoga to our community has grown into a trusted institution serving Grey Lynn, Ponsonby, West Lynn, and the wider Auckland area.

30 Years of Commitment

For three decades, we have remained dedicated to one core principle: supportive, precise teaching that builds strength, confidence, and lifelong wellbeing. Our centre has evolved with our community's needs—adding Zoom classes for flexibility, expanding our class variety to serve beginners, older adults, and advanced practitioners, and continuously refining our approach to remain at the forefront of accessible yoga education.

A Welcoming Community

Our studio at 147 Great North Road in Grey Lynn is more than a place to practice—it's a welcoming sanctuary where every body, age, and ability is honoured. We believe that yoga should be accessible, not intimidating. Every class is taught with careful attention to alignment, thoughtful use of props, and genuine support for each student's journey. That commitment to accessibility and precision remains unchanged after 30 years, and it guides everything we do.

The Iyengar Method

Learn what makes Iyengar Yoga distinct and why it's suitable for every body, every age, and every ability level.

BKS Iyengar's Legacy

Over 70 years of refined, accessible teaching form the foundation of the Iyengar method. BKS Iyengar revolutionized yoga by proving that precise alignment and the intelligent use of props make yoga safe, effective, and available to all—regardless of age, fitness level, or physical limitation. His legacy lives on in every class at the Iyengar Yoga Centre of Auckland.

Emphasis on Precise Alignment

Unlike other yoga styles, Iyengar Yoga places detailed attention on how your body moves and aligns in each pose. This precision prevents injury, builds sustainable strength, and deepens your understanding of your own body. Teachers guide you through careful adjustments and verbal cues to help you find the safest, most effective expression of each pose.

Props: The Great Equalizer

Blocks, straps, blankets, and bolsters aren't signs of weakness—they're intelligent tools that make yoga accessible to every body. Props allow you to experience the benefits of poses safely, whether you're recovering from injury, managing a chronic condition, or simply building strength and flexibility. Using props is a sign of smart, sustainable practice.

Focus on Breath & Awareness

Iyengar practice integrates mindful breathing and body awareness into every movement. This focus on the breath-body connection brings a meditative quality to your practice, calms the nervous system, and deepens your connection to your own wellbeing. It's yoga for the whole person—body, mind, and spirit.

Why Iyengar Stands Apart

Precision Over Speed

Iyengar classes move slowly and mindfully, focusing on correct alignment rather than flowing through sequences. This approach builds lasting strength and prevents injury.

Supportive Teaching

Teachers are trained to offer detailed guidance, hands-on adjustments, and modifications so every student feels supported and understood.

Therapeutic Focus

Beyond fitness, Iyengar Yoga addresses pain, imbalance, and injury. It's yoga designed for healing and sustainable wellness.
